Bill O'Connell
Associate

Bill O’Connell represents clients in high-stakes complex litigation matters in state and federal courts across the country. A versatile trial lawyer, Bill has won or secured favorable settlements for cases in areas including intellectual property, business disputes, and the False Claims Act.

Some of Bill’s recent prominent matters include:

  • Securing a settlement for Barkan Wireless IP Holdings in patent infringement lawsuit in the Eastern District of Texas against Verizon and Samsung over the sale of femtocell products known as “Network Extenders.” Bill took and defended numerous critical depositions, briefed a number of motions and argued at the Markman hearing.  In July 2019, the case settled for a confidential sum.
  • Currently representing Barkan Wireless in ongoing patent litigation regarding Sprint’s and CommScope’s femtocell products.
  • Securing a preliminary injunction for Saba Capital precluding a closed-end mutual fund from enforcing a bylaw enacted during a shareholder proxy contest. The bylaw substantially raised the voting threshold required to elect trustees, allowing Saba Capital’s replacement of Trustees to prevail.
  • Representing the chief executives of FragranceNet.com, Inc. in a derivative action filed in the Delaware Court of Chancery. The action settled in discovery just after Susman Godfrey was brought as defense trial counsel.

Prior to joining Susman Godfrey, Bill was a federal law clerk for the Hon. Judge Reena Raggi of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and for the Hon. Judge William H. Pauley III of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.  These experiences provided Bill with a unique and deep understanding of the inner workings of the bench.

Before clerking, Bill served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Duke Law Journal at Duke Law School, from which he graduated summa cum laude.  Bill earned his B.A. Phi Beta Kappa and with honors from the University of Chicago.
