Overview
Dan Lecavalier is Of Counsel in Susman Godfrey’s litigation practice, where he focuses on complex commercial litigation, business partnership disputes, and high-stakes, bet-the-company matters. He is a versatile courtroom advocate whose experience spans jury trials, appellate arguments, depositions, and mediations across a wide range of civil, regulatory, and criminal matters.
Dan has particular depth in real estate and workforce housing litigation, previously serving as lead counsel in one of the largest affordable housing litigation campaigns in Texas. Representing housing development corporations and multi-state developers in property tax exemption disputes, Dan has managed a portfolio of matters involving properties with a combined assessed value in excess of one billion dollars. His work in this space involves sophisticated, multi-layered transactions at the intersection of local government authority, tax law, and large-scale real estate development—requiring him to coordinate strategy across dozens of trial courts, appraisal districts, and appellate courts simultaneously.
Dan’s courtroom record includes securing the first summary judgment victory in a case of first impression involving a local government’s challenge to the authority of housing development corporations to acquire extraterritorial property in Parker County, Texas, as well as obtaining emergency temporary relief from the Thirteenth Court of Appeals to protect ongoing affordable housing operations and associated tax exemptions. He has also won unanimous multi-day panel rulings before county appraisal review boards, defeated temporary injunction applications, and obtained case-dispositive dismissals on jurisdictional grounds.
Dan earned his J.D. from Penn State Law, where he served as Senior Editor of the Penn State Journal of Law & International Affairs, and his B.A. in Comparative Literature from New York University. He is admitted to practice in Arizona, Texas, and Washington.
Outside the office, Dan enjoys spending time with his wife and two children.
