Meng Xi and Michael Gervais Nominated as Leaders in Law by Los Angeles Business Journal

LA partners Meng Xi and Michael Gervais and co-managing partner Kalpana Srinivasan have been nominated by The Los Angeles Business Journal as 2020 Leaders in Law. Nominees are recognized for their legal accomplishments and the significant role they play in the success of their firms and within the Los Angeles community.

Meng Xi focuses her robust practice on a variety of high-stakes patent infringement disputes. Xi recently went to trial on behalf of Personalized Media Communications (PMC) against Google on PMC’s foundational patents in the signal processing space, after obtaining victory for PMC on summary judgment. Last year, Xi obtained a total defense judgment for cybersecurity software firm, Bitdefender, against famed patent-assertion entity, Uniloc, which judgment was affirmed by the Federal Circuit. Xi  is currently litigating against industry giants such as  Samsung, IBM, and Netflix. Xi was recently named to Benchmark Litigation’s “40 and Under Hot List,” as well as a “California Trailblazer” and “Next Generation Woman Leader in Tech Law” by The Recorder.

Michael Gervais is an accomplished trial lawyer who represents plaintiffs and defendants in all types of landmark commercial litigation. For example, Gervais represented a class of indigent misdemeanor arrestees pro bono in a landmark case challenging the money bail scheme in Harris County, Texas.  Gervais’s work helped secure a sweeping preliminary injunction from a Houston federal judge, who struck down the money bail system in the County. In another matter, Gervais served as co-lead counsel representing Flo & Eddie (founding members of 60’s music group, The Turtles) along with a class of owners of pre-1972 sound recordings for copyright violations by music provider Sirius XM. Under a groundbreaking settlement, Sirius XM agreed to pay at least $25.5 million (over $16 million after fees and expenses) and royalties under a 10-year license that is valued up to $62 million (over $41 million after fees and expenses) as compensation for publicly performing without a license Pre-1972 sound recordings. Notably, Gervais was recently appointed by the Northern District of Illinois to serve on the Steering Committee representing plaintiffs in a Biometric Information Privacy Act class action MDL against TikTok and its parent company, In Re: Tiktok, Inc. Consumer Privacy Litigation.

Kalpana Srinivasan regularly wins landmark victories for her clients, including a $706.2 million jury verdict for client HouseCanary in a misappropriation of trade secret, fraud, and breach of contract case; a significant insurance litigation win for NBC subsidiary, Universal Cable Productions; and a settlement worth over $100 million on behalf of music copyright owners in a class action against Spotify. She was recently named one of Benchmark Litigation’s “Top 10 Women in Litigation” as well as one of its “Top 100 Trial Lawyers in America.”
