Partners Justin Nelson and Rohit Nath have been named by Law.com as Litigators of the Week for the leading role they played in securing a “historic” $1.5 billion deal to resolve copyright infringement claims brought by authors and copyright holders in a landmark lawsuit against AI company, Anthropic. The proposed settlement would provide approximately $3,000 in compensation per work.
Believed to be the largest publicly reported recovery in the history of US copyright litigation, the massive payout sends a powerful message of accountability to AI developers who torrented copyrighted works from illegal pirated websites to train AI models. Anthropic’s acquisition and use of books from these websites, illegal websites that have been repeatedly shut down by law enforcement and the courts, was made public for the first time as a result of this action.
On September 25th, 2025, Judge William Alsup gave the $1.5 million preliminary approval, saying, “We have some of the best lawyers in America in the courtroom right now.”
