Susman Godfrey’s Davida Brook has been listed as one of the “Top 40 Lawyers Under 40” in California by the Daily Journal. This list of elite young lawyers in the state highlights “young lawyers who have made a difference to their clients, their firms, their profession.” The lawyers named to the list are some of the most accomplished young attorneys in California today, representing excellence in private practice, corporate counsel and public interest law. This is the second honor for Brook by the Daily Journal. The first came last year when she was named one of the “Top 100 Women Lawyers in California.”
In recognizing Brook, The Daily Journal praised her work securing an appellate victory for Steven Lamar against Beats Electronics, LLC and music moguls Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine. Brook received much media attention for this win and was profiled in California legal publication The Recorder when, as a fourth year associate, she won an argument in the Court of Appeal of the State of California, Second District, who reversed a lower court ruling that granted a summary judgment in favor of Beats. Brook is currently in trial representing Lamar for this very matter.
Brook is also currently serving in another high stakes, highly visible matter, Brett Ratner v. Melanie Kohler and John and/or Jane Does, where she is co-lead counsel in this case brought by well-known Hollywood producer, Brett Ratner. With the help of the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund, Brook is defending Melanie Kohler, who is being sued for defamation by Ratner after she accused the producer of sexual harassment and rape via a Facebook post. Notably, in February of this year, Brook and her team convinced a Federal Judge in Hawaii that California’s anti-SLAPP laws should apply in this matter even though they believe the case was purposefully filed in Hawaii in part to avoid that law.
