The Susman Godfrey Prize

Susman Godfrey is pleased to announce the Susman Godfrey Prize, an honor awarded annually to up to 12 students of color who are finishing their first or second year at an eligible law school. The Prize is part of the firm’s ongoing commitment to celebrate and promote diversity among civil trial lawyers.

2021 SUSMAN GODFREY PRIZE RECIPIENTS WILL RECEIVE:

(1) a $2,500 cash award; and

(2) an offer for a summer clerkship at any of Susman Godfrey’s offices (Houston, Los Angeles, New York, or Seattle) for Summer 2022.*

Recipients will be recognized at a virtual reception held in their honor by Susman Godfrey.

*Accepting the Prize does not require the recipient to accept a summer clerkship with Susman Godfrey.

Recipients can complete the summer clerkship either the summer after their second year of law school or the summer between law school graduation and the start of a federal judicial clerkship.

In the Prize’s inaugural year, Susman Godfrey will select recipients from the following law schools, recognizing the alumni presence these schools have at the firm: UC Berkeley, UCLA, University of Chicago, Columbia, Harvard, University of Houston, Northwestern, NYU, Penn, Stanford, University of Texas and Yale.

Law school faculty members and administrators are eligible to nominate for the Prize students of color who have excelled academically in law school and have impressive overall achievement. There is no cap on the number of nominations from a law school.

NOMINATIONS SHOULD INCLUDE:

(1) a completed nomination form (which can be downloaded here); and

(2) a letter of recommendation detailing the basis for the nomination and describing the nominee’s academic excellence and overall achievement.

Upon receipt of these materials, a representative of Susman Godfrey will contact the nominee for a copy of their law school transcript and resume. Please notify your nominee that we will be doing so.

The deadline to submit nominations is February 15, 2021.

Susman Godfrey will evaluate the nominations and make award decisions based on a review of each nomination form, the accompanying recommendation letter, the nominee’s law school transcript and resume, and a virtual interview with each finalist. Susman Godfrey will contact nominees separately to obtain the school transcript and resume.

Susman Godfrey will meet virtually with finalists by April 1, 2021.

Susman Godfrey Prize recipients will be notified by May 1, 2021.

Nomination forms and recommendation letters should be sent by email to sgprize@susmangodfrey.com or mailed to:
