Policies & Initiatives
ONE LAWYER, ONE VOTE – At Susman Godfrey, partners and associates alike play an active and important role in critical firm decision-making. Our lawyers take part in a weekly firm meeting where each lawyer votes equally on potential cases, employment decisions, and other firm matters. This egalitarian approach to governance fosters inclusiveness and engagement among all lawyers and promotes diversity.
STAFFING AND STRUCTURE – Susman Godfrey’s unique structure—with more partners than associates and lean staffing by design and necessity—breaks down the traditional law firm hierarchy. The firm’s structure and centralized assignment process also ensures that all lawyers receive early and consistent “stand-up” opportunities—at trial, in arbitrations, in hearings, in depositions, and in front of clients—in the firm’s most important matters. This approach promotes opportunity and training for young lawyers, including those in groups that have been historically underrepresented in the legal profession.
WOMEN AND MINORITY FELLOWSHIP FOR 1L STUDENTS – The firm offers a two-week fellowship to first-year law students who are women, people of color, individuals who identify as LGBTQ, or members of other groups underrepresented in today’s legal profession. The firm seeks diverse applicants who have excelled in their first semester of law school and want to learn firsthand about trial work at Susman Godfrey. Fellows receive $5,000 upon completion of the program.
DIVERSITY COMMITTEE – The firm has a robust and active diversity committee that regularly meets to discuss and execute diversity-related initiatives at the firm.
