Susman Godfrey is committed to growing and maintaining diversity among its trial lawyers. This commitment is one of Susman Godfrey’s core values and is essential to maintaining our position as the nation’s premier litigation firm. Diversity enriches the experience and ability of all of our lawyers and is critical to the achievement of winning results for our clients.

Susman Godfrey thus seeks to attract the brightest legal minds from diverse talent pools. We are proud of where we are today, but promoting diversity is an ongoing mandate that we strive towards. The firm strongly encourages members of all underrepresented groups to apply. Susman Godfrey does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, religion, color, national origin, ancestry, sex, age, marital status, disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

The firm also takes cases we feel align with our mission to improve diversity. For example, in the Faculty, Alumni, and Students Opposed to Racial Preferences v. New York University Law Review matter, a pro bono case, our lawyers represent New York University in defense of its actions promoting diversity and inclusiveness. The case, which is staffed and actively litigated by a diverse team of Susman Godfrey lawyers, is profiled here.

At Susman Godfrey, we don’t just talk the talk. The following are some of our policies, initiatives, and accolades related to our commitment to diversity, inclusiveness, and equality.

Policies & Initiatives

ONE LAWYER, ONE VOTE – At Susman Godfrey, partners and associates alike play an active and important role in critical firm decision-making. Our lawyers take part in a weekly firm meeting where each lawyer votes equally on potential cases, employment decisions, and other firm matters. This egalitarian approach to governance fosters inclusiveness and engagement among all lawyers and promotes diversity.

STAFFING AND STRUCTURESusman Godfrey’s unique structure—with more partners than associates and lean staffing by design and necessity—breaks down the traditional law firm hierarchy. The firm’s structure and centralized assignment process also ensures that all lawyers receive early and consistent “stand-up” opportunities—at trial, in arbitrations, in hearings, in depositions, and in front of clients—in the firm’s most important matters. This approach promotes opportunity and training for young lawyers, including those in groups that have been historically underrepresented in the legal profession.

WOMEN AND MINORITY FELLOWSHIP FOR 1L STUDENTSThe firm offers a two-week fellowship to first-year law students who are women, people of color, individuals who identify as LGBTQ, or members of other groups underrepresented in today’s legal profession. The firm seeks diverse applicants who have excelled in their first semester of law school and want to learn firsthand about trial work at Susman Godfrey. Fellows receive $5,000 upon completion of the program.

DIVERSITY COMMITTEE – The firm has a robust and active diversity committee that regularly meets to discuss and execute diversity-related initiatives at the firm.

UNLIMITED, GENDER-NEUTRAL PARENTAL LEAVE – Susman Godfrey offers unlimited paid parental leave to new parents, regardless of gender or caregiver status. Read more about this policy here.

GENDER FAIRNESS COMMITMENT STATEMENT – Susman Godfrey signed a Gender Fairness Commitment Statement as part of the Houston Bar Association’s Gender Fairness Initiative. Click here for more information.
