Ryan Sila

Ryan Sila litigates high-stakes business and consumer rights disputes in courtrooms across the nation. His work spans across a variety of practice areas, and his client base, which includes both plaintiffs and defendants, is equally diverse.

Ryan joined Susman Godfrey after clerking for Judge Raymond J. Lohier, Jr., on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and for Judge Jesse M. Furman on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. 

At Susman Godfrey, Ryan has faced off against industry behemoths, most recently in multiple landmark data privacy class actions against Google:

• In Rodriguez v. Google, Ryan and a team from Susman Godfrey serve as co-lead counsel representing a class of nearly 100 million Google users. This case challenges Google’s practice of monitoring and collecting data about users’ activity on mobile apps that Google does not own—even after users expressly deny Google permission to do so. Ryan has had a leading role in Plaintiffs’ discovery efforts, expert strategies, and motion practice. This includes Plaintiffs’ successful motion for class certification, which Ryan argued with co-counsel. The result was historic: certification of one of the biggest — if not the biggest — damages classes ever certified in a privacy case. Ryan also led the briefing opposing Google’s motion for summary judgment, which the court recently denied in full. Ryan and the team are now preparing for trial.
• In Brown v. Google, Ryan and a team from Susman Godfrey serve as co-lead counsel opposing Google in a case regarding Google’s collection of users’ internet browsing information even when they are in “Incognito” mode. Ryan supported Plaintiffs’ efforts in all parts of this litigation. He played a significant role in defeating Google’s motion to for summary judgment and successfully argued evidentiary motions during the pretrial conference. The team struck a watershed deal with Google to resolve the case, which requires the company to change its disclosures, delete or remediate data it had previously collected from Incognito users, and limit the information it collects from Incognito in the future, all while preserving users’ ability to seek money damages. The proposed settlement is pending court approval.

Ryan also represents Veeva Systems, a cloud-based software and data company for the life sciences industry, in high-stakes federal antitrust and trade-secret lawsuits against IQVIA. The cases involve antitrust issues relating to master data management and other life sciences software, as well as alleged trade secrets relating to healthcare data. Ryan has played a critical role in discovery efforts and briefing dispositive motions. He recently argued in a hearing on the parties’ motions for summary judgment, which remain pending.

Ryan graduated magna cum laude and Order of the Coif from New York University School of Law, where he served as an editor of the NYU Law Review.  He received his undergraduate degree magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania.
