Leading legal publication, The American Lawyer, has recognized Houston Partner Chanler Langham as Mentor of the Year as part of its 2021 Industry Awards. Langham, who was honored at an event in New York on December 2nd, is a trailblazer in mentoring young lawyers and students in the Texas legal community.
In addition to the robust docket he maintains at the firm, Langham is devoted to mentoring young diverse lawyers within Susman Godfrey. His unwavering support gives lawyers insight into how they envision their career and the power to make their professional dreams a reality.
Outside the firm, Langham is just as active in the legal community. He is a founder of a Houston organization for black male lawyers, Sweatt Equity Group, named after the pivotal Sweatt v. Painter SCOTUS case in which Sweatt successfully challenged the “separate but equal” doctrine after being denied admission to UT Law School. Langham is also deeply involved in several Houston Bar Association (HBA) community-focused programs such as Lawyers for Literacy, Communities in Schools, and in his role on the HBA Board of Directors. Langham also serves on the Board of Trustees for Huston-Tillotson University.
In addition, Langham mentors Black law students at the University of Houston Law Center and UT Law School. Specifically, members of the Black Law Students Association and Thurgood Marshall Legal Society. Chanler maintains these relationships throughout the years, and has mentored students after graduation, as associates, law clerks, and in-house counsel. The Dean of UT Law recently referred to Chanler and his mentor group as, “the equivalent of Navy Seals.”
