The Houston Bar Association (HBA) presented Houston-based partner, Chanler Langham, with their annual President’s Award in recognition of his leadership and dedicated work for the Association’s Lawyers for Literacy Committee, which Langham co-chairs.
The Lawyers for Literacy Committee seeks to improve and increase youth literacy within Harris and its neighboring counties. They organize several events throughout the year including an annual HBA-sponsored book drive involving law firms, corporations, and individuals—last year’s drive was an enormous success, raising a total of $32,626 and donating 10,339 books. The Committee also partners with Harris County elementary schools to conduct readings and other literacy-focused programs for Constitution Day and Law Day which educate students on the legal system. Notably, this year’s Literacy Program included the renovation of the Charles Shearn Elementary School Library, a venture for which Langham, who co-chaired the project with the HISD Department of Library Services and Weekley Family YMCA, helped raise $30,000.
