They’ve Got Next: Bloomberg Law Recognizes Michael Kelso

Houston Partner Michael Kelso has been featured in the fifth edition of Bloomberg Law’s series, “They’ve Got Next.”  Michael is recognized as part of a class of young lawyers who, “excel at client work at their law firms and companies, take on weighty leadership roles, and still make time for mentorship and pro bono work.”

Michael has secured over a billion dollars for his plaintiff clients in verdicts and recoveries. Most recently Michael won a $260 million jury verdict for the City of Baltimore in its opioids lawsuit against two distributors of opioid drugs, McKesson and AmerisourceBergen, after an eight-week trial. The jury verdict is the only successful verdict any jurisdiction has obtained in opioid litigation against McKesson and AmerisourceBergen. In the ongoing LIBOR Antirust litigation, Michael has recovered over $790 million in settlements and has won class certification for his clients, the direct-purchaser plaintiffs, on their antitrust claims. He most recently won a significant appellate victory defeating jurisdictional challenges by major foreign-bank defendants. On the defense side, Michael has been repeatedly tapped by multinational commodity training company, Vitol, to serve as counsel in high stakes lawsuits. In one matter, Michael won a major summary judgment victory for Vitol in federal court, defeating claims by Puerto Rico’s public utility seeking to nullify six fuel-supply contracts and recover nearly $4 billion in payments.

In his interview with Bloomberg Law, Michael discusses his most recent wins, the importance of integrity in law practice, how defines success, and his greatest mentor. He also shares the most played songs on his summer playlist and the importance of family in his life.
