Susman Godfrey associate Miranda Campbell Kerrigan helped secure a significant victory for Transparence, LLC in its patent litigation against Samsung, briefing and arguing against a motion that sought to invalidate every asserted patent claim. On September 29, U.S. District Judge Robert W. Schroeder III of the Eastern District of Texas denied Samsung’s motion in full, allowing the claims to proceed toward trial. The case concerns patented application-management technology, including features for managing authentication, notifications, and updates across multiple applications. Read the decision here.
Samsung’s motion challenged the claims under Section 101 of the Patent Act, arguing that they covered abstract ideas ineligible for patent protection. Kerrigan, a first-year associate based in Houston, prepared Transparence’s response and presented its arguments at an August 28 hearing in Texarkana. Demonstrating a sharp command of the law and facts, she addressed the court’s questions and explained why Samsung’s challenge should be rejected.
“Miranda’s command of the law and facts, poise, and thoughtful responses to the court’s questions were exceptional,” said partner Michael Brightman, who attended the hearing with Kerrigan. “At Susman Godfrey, we believe talented young lawyers should have the opportunity to take on consequential work from the start. Miranda showed exactly why we place that trust in them.” The ruling resolves a consequential pretrial challenge to Transparence’s case and highlights Kerrigan’s substantial contribution at an early stage of her career.
Brightman and Kerrigan are serving alongside partners and co-lead counsel Shawn Blackburn and Ryan Caughey. The matter is Transparence, LLC v. Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., case number 2:24-cv-00910 in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.
