Nationally renowned trial lawyer Steve Susman, the managing and founding partner of Susman Godfrey, has established The Civil Jury Project at NYU School of Law. This is the only academic center in the nation whose sole purpose is to protect the 7th Amendment right to a jury trial in civil cases. It is common knowledge that jury trials in civil cases are rapidly vanishing. The Project will examine why this is happening, whether trial by jury still serves a useful purpose in our complex society, and, if so, what, if anything, can be done to reverse the trend.
Mr. Susman, who will continue to try cases out of Susman Godfrey’s New York and Houston offices, will serve as Executive Director of the Project and will become an Adjunct Professor teaching a course on how to try a case in a way to eliminate the criticism of trial by jury. Professors Samuel Issacharoff and Catherine Sharkey will serve as the Faculty Directors of the Project. The Project has an impressive list of Judicial and Academic Advisors.
